Charleston & the Tri-county Area


The Charleston Tri-county area is growing fast. Below is a list of the three counties and some of their main cities. Click on the city names to learn more about the individual cities. Click on the county names below to go to the official county web sites to learn more about the whole county. Some of the web sites have excellent photos and videos of the area. Berkeley County  was established in 1682 , and is located in the southeast portion of South Carolina. The county seat is Moncks Corner. For an interactive map of Berkeley County click here . For videos of Berkeley County click here . Berkeley County is home of: Cypress Gardens , Old Santee Canal Park , and Mepkin Abbey . Lake Marion , Lake Moultrie , and Francis Marion National Forest provide opportunities for; fishing , hunting, camping , hiking, bird-watching , wildlife observation, and photography. Berkeley also has many beautiful plantations, some of which are open to the public. Goose Creek is the largest city in Berkeley county and a bedroom community of Charleston.

Dorchester County  was established by some Congregationists who left Dorchester, Massachusetts in 1696, to live here. Although the town no longer exists, the name was used for the county. St. George is the county seat. Here is a map of Dorchester County. Dorchester County is famous for its many plantations like Middleton Place Plantation and for Francis Beidler Forest .

Charl eston County   and Charleston itself, the county seat,   began in 1670 with the establishment of Charles Town Landing. Here is a map of Charleston County. Charleston is mostly known for it's art and rich history; starting with the Landing and the American Revolution, and going on through Fort Sumter and the War Between the States. Charleston county is full of historic houses, buildings like St. Michael's Churchplantations, and sites.
